Alex grew up in a strong evangelical church
in a city near Sao Paulo, Brazil. He left
Brazil at the age of 20 to study in the
U.S., and it was then that he met and married
Katy. Early in their marriage, Alex and
Katy served in Portugal with InterVarsity
Christian Fellowship. Returning to the U.S.,
the Araujos settled into secular jobs and
began raising a family. In 1987, they were
challenged to return to missions as a career.
Alex and Katy currently work with Partners
International, a ministry specializing in
developing partnerships among missionaries
and mission agencies, which work in the
same regions of the world. Alex’s vision
is to help bring together Christians from
non-Western countries whose role in missions
has been growing faster than our own here
in the United States. These partnerships
are crucial as they allow the missionaries
to be more effective in their ministry to
unreached peoples.
Agencies and missionaries frequently overlap
in their ministry outreach and work. Partnering
their efforts allows them to work more efficiently
and effectively by utilizing each other’s
strengths and covering each other’s weaknesses.
It can be a challenge uniting individuals
from differing cultural backgrounds (ie.
perspectives on time management, strategy,
style of ministry, methodology, etc.). Alex’s
first-hand experience and unique cross-cultural
perspective makes him particularly gifted
and effective in helping the Western and
non-Western agencies to work hand in hand.
